Mission Granbury's Response to Bobby Woods' Execution

On April 30, 1997, Bobby Wayne Woods entered the Hood County home of his ex-girlfriend through an open window and sexually assaulted an 11 year old white female, then abducted her and her 9-year-old male brother. He severely beat the 9-year-old boy about the head, resulting in serious injury; he cut the throat of the 11-year-old victim, resulting in her death. Convicted murderer Bobby Wayne Woods is scheduled for execution by the State of Texas on 12/03/2009.

Mission Granbury was founded in 1998 after this and other murders shocked the local community and highlighted a void in the growing area’s social services. Mission Granbury initiated programs to answer the cry for help and serve Hood County individuals and families in crisis.  We care for those affected by domestic violence, abuse, and poverty.  As a strong professional agency, Mission Granbury leverages a holistic and collaborative approach to offer a variety of inter-related human service programs under one umbrella agency. Because this crime inspired the founding of our organization, we have received questions about our response to the planned execution of this offender.  Below is our response.

Statement from Mission Granbury Executive Director Ginger Eways, 11/30/2009

Mission Granbury does not have an official position regarding capital punishment. Information regarding our founding and our detailed, thorough philosophy about ending domestic violence is located here on our website.  Our goals for the community are reflected in our adherence to our founding principles:

  • We treat each individual with dignity and respect.
  • We provide a course of action to care for those affected by domestic violence, abuse, and poverty in a way that truly fosters a better, healthier, and safer life.

Questions & Answers about This Issue, 11/30/2009

Q: Is it true that Mission Granbury was founded as a result of this murder?

A: When news of Bobby Wood’s murder of 11-year-old Sarah Patterson reached the public, Hood County residents were shocked, outraged, and even disbelieving to a certain extent that something of this magnitude and brutality could have occurred in our community. In hopes of preventing such a tragedy from happening again, the community took action. Mission Granbury was founded by a group of concerned citizens who united under the inspiration of Pastor Bill Boyd of Acton United Methodist Church and the leadership of Shirley Hooks, the founding president of the organization.  The goal was to combat and prevent the atrocities of domestic violence.

Q: Has Mission Granbury lived up to their founding goal?

A: Prior to Mission Granbury’s founding, no safe haven or assistance organization existed to provide help, guidance, security, and safety for victims of domestic violence threats or actions. Throughout the years, we have consistently made great strides to help answer cries for help within the community and to provide victims with courses of action that foster a better, healthier, and safer life.

Q: What is Mission Granbury’s position on the planned execution of Bobby Woods?

A: Mission Granbury does not have an official position on capital punishment. We advocate the end of violence and promotion of peace in all situations and adhere to our mission to care for those affected by domestic violence, abuse, and poverty. Within this framework, we also value justice and understand that seeing justice served as the law dictates is a strong component in the healing and coping process for families affected by the loss of their loved ones. Mission Granbury is dedicated to being a part of the healing process for all individuals suffering from acts of family violence, and we are deeply grieved anytime there is a loss of human life.
